006 - THE POWER OF SAYING NO

Entry No. 006 — The Power of Saying No

No is not a soft answer. No is a shield. No is the quiet declaration that my vision is not for sale to the highest bidder or the loudest voice in the room.

In the beginning, I said yes too often. Yes to timelines that rushed the work. Yes to partnerships that didn’t feel aligned but promised reach. Yes to projects that looked impressive from the outside but hollowed me out on the inside. I thought saying yes was how you built momentum — but momentum built in the wrong direction will still take you somewhere you don’t want to be.

Now, I look at every opportunity and ask myself: Does this move serve the work, or does it only serve the moment? If it’s just the moment, I pass.

Saying no has cost me before. I’ve turned down checks I could have used. I’ve declined seats at tables people fight to sit at. I’ve walked away from collaborations that would have made headlines — because the cost to my vision would have been greater than the benefit to my name.

It took time to learn that no is not rejection. No is preservation. No is the discipline of knowing that a misaligned yes can stain the very standard I’ve spent years building.

And here’s the thing about no: it makes the yes mean more. When I commit, it’s because I believe in it enough to stand behind it long after the moment has passed. That’s not hesitation — that’s power.

If I’m going to build something that lasts, my no has to be as intentional as my yes. And both have to be rooted in the same truth: my vision is not negotiable.
